In 1967 Filipino cyclist Maximo Junta won the amateur road race title at the national championships, finishing more than eight minutes ahead of his nearest rival. During the late 1960s and early 1970s Junta was part of the national cycling team, representing them at multiple national competitions. At the 1971 Asian Cycling Championships in Singapore, he won gold in the team road race along with silver in the team time trial. These performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1972 Games in München, where he competed on both the road and track. Junta had further success at the Asian Cycling Championships, winning bronze in the team time trial in 1973 in Shuzenji, Japan.
