Competing as an amateur, Henning Jørgensen’s cycling career spanned from the late 1960s until the early 1980s. Jørgensen had success early on when he became the national team time trial champion in 1969, before winning the title again two years later. In 1972 he made his first of two appearances at the Olympics, placing 48th in the road race at the München Games. Throughout the 1970s Jørgensen was a mainstay in the team time trial race at the national championships, winning three more titles (1974, 1976–77), in addition to finishing on the podium on four further occasions. Towards the end of the decade he won races in Belgium and Italy, along with multiple podium places on stages of the Milk Race in England. Jørgensen returned to the Olympics in 1980 for the Moskva Games, finishing 31st in the road race.
