Biography

Philipp Lubinus first gained media attention when he lit the Olympic flame in Kiel-Schilksee for the opening of the 1972 Olympic sailing events, a ceremony that took place on 28 August, two days after the Opening Ceremony in München. He studied human medicine at the University of Innsbruck from 1974-78 and at the Christian Albrecht’s University in Kiel from 1978-82. Subsequently, he was a medical physician for the Naval Air Squadron in Kiel.

In 1991, Lubinus was awarded his approval as a medical specialist in surgery and joined the staff of the Lubinus Clinicum, which had been founded by his great-grandfather. From 1995-2015 he was the clinic’s Medical Director. He retired from this post for health reasons and appointed his son as his successor. Philipp Lubinus later spent much of his time in Southern France. Lubinus was a yacht owner and avid open sea sailor like his father Hans Hermann (1928-2015), who competed in the Admiral’s Cup in the 1970s.
