Japanese track cyclist Tadashi Kato had a lengthy career that spanned 40 years. In 1952 Kato was part of the Japanese cycling team that competed at the Helsinki Olympics where he rode in the 1,000 metres time trial and the 4,000 metres team pursuit on the track. He also participated in the road race at the Games but withdrew around the halfway mark. In 1953 he won his first keirin title, with him eventually amassing almost 600 victories in the event before his retirement in 1992.
