Charles King of Belle Vue CC won the 1933 Southern Counties 5-mile title, and after finishing third in the Olympic tandem trial at Herne Hill, with Alan Stubbs of Norwood Paragon, it was felt he would be in the tandem squad for the Berlin Olympics. However, at Coventry in July 1936, King impressed in the 4,000 metre trial, and made it onto the British pursuit team that went on to win the bronze medal instead. He won many honours with the Belle Vue team, and in 1938 captured the London Cycle Racing League title, the NCU London Centre pursuit title, and beat Norwood Paragon to win the National pursuit title.
King emigrated to New Zealand in 1952 and settled at New Lynn, Auckland where he became a member, and later president, of the Auckland Cycle Touring Association (ACTA). A former plumber, he built bicycle frames for ACTA colleagues, and friends. The frames carried the “Prendero” marque and bore the logo of the five Olympic rings.
