Regarded as the best cyclist in Cameroonian history, Joseph Kono won a plethora of races, both home and abroad, in addition to competing at four consecutive Olympic Games. During his lengthy career he amassed more than 140 victories, including becoming a seven-time national champion and three-time provincial champion, and earning two wins at the Tour of Cameroon. Across the continent he also became a two-time African champion, won the Tour de Côte d’Ivoire twice, and won gold at the Central African Games.

From 1972 to 1984 Kono competed at four editions of the Olympics, riding in the team time trial at each one.
