Biography

István Lang began his cycling career in 1950 with the colours of Bp. Vörös Meteor, then continued as a competitor for Vasas, where he was primarily known as a track racer. Between 1952 and 1964 Lang won the Hungarian championship four times with his clubs’ 4,000 metres pursuit team. He won the championship three times in the 4,000 metres individual pursuit and the Madison, and once in tandem and the points race. He was also a multiple national record holder with his 4,000 metres record standing for more than 10 years.

Lang competed for the Hungarian national team intermittently between 1952 and 1965. He was barely 19 when he took part in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he finished 18th in the 1,000 metres time trial and 10th as a member of the 4,000 metres pursuit team. He also competed in the road individual and team races but did not place there. Lang also competed twice at the World Championships, in 1963 in Liège and 1964 in Paris.

Lang earned a coaching diploma from the College of Physical Education in 1967, but did not practice the profession. After finishing his sports career, he worked in the iron industry. He was a successful entrepreneur until his retirement.
