In 1964 Spanish amateur cyclist José Manuel Lasa was selected to compete at the Tokyo Olympics, where he placed 23rd in the road race, only 0.11 seconds behind the race winner. The following year Lasa won silver in both the amateur road race and the 100 kilometres team time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in San Sebastián. He then turned professional, winning a stage at both the 1966 and 1967 editions of the Vuelta a La Rioja. Lasa had the best result of his career at the 1969 Vuelta a España, finishing fourth in the general classification. His younger brother Miguel was also a cyclist, competing at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
