Biography

Hjalmar Levin was the son of a soldier; his mother died when he was just six-years-old. In 1902, he was one of the co-founders of his club VoIF Diana in Eskilstuna. His first major success was a third place in the race round Lake Mälaren in 1904. In this traditional race, he finished second in 1907 and eventually won the race in 1911. Although his time was better than Henrik Morén’s previous record, it was not approved as a record, as the finish line that year was shifted to Råsunda district in Stockholm.

In 1909, Levin won the Swedish championships in the time trial over 10 km and 100 km, and repeated his victory over the 100 km in 1910. In addition, he won the Lake Hjälmaren round in 1909 and 1911. The race round Lake Mälaren at the 1912 Olympic Games was his last major appearance, but he abandoned the race between Södertälje and Läggesta, after approximately 60 km.

Levin worked as a foundryman in Eskilstuna. He got married to Anna Viktoria Larsson. The couple had two daughters and one son.
