British Guiana (now Guyana) competed at the Olympics for the first time when they sent a delegation of four athletes to the 1948 London Games. Laddie Lewis was selected as their only cyclist, with him riding on both the road and track. His performances, however, were inauspicious, with him not finishing in the road race, being eliminated early in the track sprint, and coming last in the 1,000 metres time trial. Lewis was also the stepfather of the Guyanese politician Lindley Geborde, who led the short-lived Union of Guyanese International party at the 1992 general election.
