Hans Lüthi began his cycling career in the mid-1950s, winning several races as an amateur in Switzerland. In 1964 Lüthi became the national amateur champion in the road race to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. At the Tokyo Games he finished 16th in both the road race and the team time trial. One year later he successfully defended his national title, in addition to winning the Swiss team time trial event. Lüthi was the top-ranked rider in the Swiss Cycling Federation’s ranking for both 1964 and 1965. He continued to have good results towards the end of his career, including winning the 1965 Zürich Amateur Championship, followed by the Tour of Lower Austria a year later.
