In 1970 amateur cyclist Claude Magni became both the French military road cycling champion and the French military pursuit champion. One year later Magni won the overall classification at the Tour du Maroc, a stage of the Tour de Pologne, and several smaller races in his native France. His success continued into 1972, when he won a stage of the Milk Race in England and the team time trial stage at the Tour de l’Avenir. For his performance in the latter Magni was selected to ride in the same event at the München Olympics, where the French team finished 18th. One year later he turned professional, riding in three editions of the Tour de France from 1974 to 1976.
