Track cyclist Maic Malchow finished sixth in the 1,000 metres time trial event at the 1988 Seoul Olympics representing East Germany. In 1980, he won the Youth World title, setting a new world record. In 1986 he then won the senior World Championships. In 1981, 1984, 1986 and 1988 he also won national title.
Malchow had to give up his career after the race in Seoul because the former GDR leadership had suggested he gave “poor performances”. He later turned to coaching after German re-unification.
