Jørgen Marcussen

The cycling career of Jørgen Marcussen spanned more than two decades, first as a junior and then as an amateur, before turning professional. In 1967 Marcussen finished third in the individual time trial for juniors at the Danish championships, before repeating the result in the junior team time trial one year later at the Nordic Championships. In 1970 he won his first national title as part of the quartet in the team time trial for amateurs. Two years later Marcussen was selected to ride in the road race and the team time trial at the München Olympics, finishing 21st and 11th, respectively.

Marcussen continued to ride as an amateur for a couple more years, becoming the Danish national time trial champion in 1975, in addition to winning the overall classification at the Grand Prix Guillaume Tell in Switzerland the same year. He then turned professional, riding for more than a dozen teams over the next 13 years. After riding in smaller races across Europe he was selected to represent Denmark in the road race at the 1978 UCI World Championships in West Germany, where he won a surprise bronze, finishing only 20 seconds behind the winner.

From 1976 to 1982 Marcussen rode in eight Grand Tours, including six editions of the Giro d’Italia. In 1980 he won stage five of the Giro, a short individual time trial from Pontedera to Pisa. That same year he also competed in the road race at the World Championships, finishing a respectable eighth in a bunch of riders just over four minutes behind the winner. Perhaps the biggest shock in Marcussen’s career came at the Vuelta a España in 1981, when he just missed out on the podium after placing fourth overall.

Following his retirement in the late 1980s Marcussen worked as a cycling coach for the Danish national team, with Rolf Sørensen being one of his many students. He then worked as the sports director for several cycling teams in both Germany and Denmark. Marcussen married fellow cyclist Karina Skibby, who rode at the Olympics in 1988 and 1992.
