Mauricio Mata competed at the 1960 Roma Olympics, riding on both the road and track. Mata won a bronze medal in team pursuit at the 1963 Pan American Games. He won five medals at the 1959 and 1962 Central American and Caribbean Games, with gold in 1959 individual pursuit and 1962 team pursuit.
After he retired, Mata worked as a newspaper reporter. He also worked for Bicycles Mercurio and was technical director of the Bicycles Regina team. For many years the Mauricio Mata Race was held in his honor every August on Venustiano Carranza Avenue.
