Indian cyclist Raj Kumar Mehra was a pioneer of the sport in his home state of West Bengal. Mehra competed for India in the road race at the Olympics in London and Helsinki in 1948 and 1952, respectively. In between his two appearances at the Olympics he also won silver in the 4,000 metres team pursuit at the first Asian Games in 1951 and represented India in the Peace Race in Europe. Mehra later returned to the Olympics for the 1964 Games in Tokyo where he worked as the manager of the Indian cycling team. He was also the assistant secretary of the Cycling Federation of India.
