Juan Alberto Merlos was an Argentine cyclist who won several titles on both the road and track in South America in the 1960s and 1970s. Merlos rode in the 4,000 metres team pursuit at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics where Argentina finished fifth. Three years later he had double success at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg with gold in the 4,000 metres team pursuit and silver in the 4,000 metres individual pursuit. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics he competed on both the road and track, finishing seventh in the 100 kilometres team time trial. Just prior to the Mexico City Games Merlos won silver in the team pursuit at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Montevideo. In 1974 he became an Argentine champion on the track with victory in the 4,000 meters pursuit.
