After his appearance at the 1960 Olympics, José Antonio Momeñe turned professional, competing through 1970. He had a nice career as a pro, winning several stages in major stage races, including stage wins at all three of the major tours, the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a España. He started his pro career with stage wins in the Tour de l’Avenir in 1962 and 1963, also winning the Ruta del Sol in 1962. He won the third stage of the 1964 Tour de France, the sixth stage of the 1968 Giro, and at the Vuelta, Momeñe won the third stage in 1966. His only other major professional victory came in winning the 1967 Grand Prix de Llodio. He competed six times at the Vuelta a España, placing fifth in GC in 1966, and rode the Tour four times, placing fourth in 1966.
