Biography

Track cyclist Gerald Mortag was a member of the East German pursuit team at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, winning a silver medal, losing in the final to the Soviet Union. Mortag also was on World Championship teams from 1977-79 that won golds. He missed the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics due to the boycott by East Germany and competed at the Friendship Games instead, winning another gold medal.

Mortag studied sports at the DHfK Leipzig (Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur) and became a track cycling coach at Gera. After re-unification he worked with teams at the Thuringia Cycling Federation.
