In 1960 Ignace Mandjambi became the first national cycling champion of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) following the nation’s independence from Belgium. The DRC first competed at the Olympics eight years later when it sent a delegation of five cyclists to Mexico City. Mandjambi competed in the road race at the Games but did not finish the course.
