José Pauwels rode the team pursuit for Belgium at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Pauwels was second in the Belgian Road Championships in 1951. In 1952 he won stage three of the Tour of Belgium for amateurs. He was second that year in the Belgian amateur individual pursuit championship, and finished third on the road in the 1952 Bruxelles-Opwijk race.
