Virgilio Pereyra won three stages of the 1949 edition of the Tour of Uruguay to finish the race third overall. The following year Pereyra won another three stages of his home race, going on to finish first in the general classification. He continued to be consistent at the Tour, winning five stages over the next two years and earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1952 Helsinki Games he finished 33rd in the individual road race, more than 16 minutes behind the race winner. Pereyra continued to ride the Tour of Uruguay throughout the 1950s, winning another stage in 1958.
