Biography

During his brief career in the first half of the 1960s Dutch cyclist Jan Pieterse won gold at the Olympics. In the early 1960s Pieterse had several victories in amateur races in the Netherlands, before winning the overall classification at the 1963 Tour of Austria. This was followed by more wins at home, which earned Pieterse a place on the Olympic team for the 1964 Games in Tokyo. As part of the Dutch quartet, he won gold in the team time trial, finishing 24 seconds ahead of the Italian team. Pieterse then turned professional, but with little success he retired at the age of 23 before going to work as an insurance agent.
