Carlo Rancati was one of the most popular Italian track cyclists. Born in Milano, he was an excellent rouleur and professional with the GBC team from 1964-73, but without any road victories. However, he won many titles on the track, especially in six-day racing. Rancati was Italian amateur pursuit champion in 1963, and won silver medals in team pursuit at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1964 World Championships. In 1970 he was Italian champion in the motor-paced event, placing second in 1971. Rancati had diabetes. In 2012 he slipped in his house, violently hitting his head and fracturing the skull base. He went into a coma and never recovered.
