During the 1960s and 1970s Miguel Samacá was one of the best road cyclists in Colombia. Samacá had an impressive record at the Vuelta a Colombia, winning the race in 1972 and 1974, in addition to finishing on the podium three more times and winning nine individual stages during his career. At home he also won the Vuelta al Táchira in 1972, and bronze and silver at the national road race championships in 1967 and 1968, respectively.
Samacá competed in the road race at three consecutive Olympic Games from 1968 to 1976, with his best performance coming at the 1972 München Games, when he placed ninth. One year earlier he won silver in the team time trial with Álvaro Pachón, Martín Rodríguez, and Rafael A. Niño at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali.
