In 1947 and 1948 Swiss cyclist Jakob Schenk won the national team time trial title to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. At the London Games he finished 13th in the road race to help Switzerland finish sixth overall in the team event. One year later he turned professional, which saw him compete in the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de Suisse. Schenk continued to race for a couple more years but was tragically killed in a fall whilst riding in the 1951 edition of the Tour du Lac Léman in Montreux. He was only 30-years-old.
