Biography

Iwan Schmid began his cycling career with stage victories at the Tour de l’Avenir in France in both 1971 and 1972 to earn himself a place on the Swiss Olympic team. Schmid then finished 20th in the road race at the München Games, only 36 seconds behind the winner. Over the next few years he had consistent results in races in both Switzerland and France, winning another stage of the Tour de l’Avenir in 1974. Two years later he turned professional, winning stage eight of the Tour de Suisse. Schmid also rode in that years’ Tour de France, finishing 51st overall in the general classification, before retiring from cycling a year later.
