East German cyclist Jan Schur, son of legendary Gustav-Adolf Schur, was a member of the gold medal-winning 100 km time trial team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He also won the 100 km team time trial at the 1989 World Championships. After re-unification, Schur turned professional with several Italian teams, riding the Tour de France in 1990 and 1991, until he had a sporting accident meant he had to retire from the sport.
Schur then led a small sports hotel and studied sports science at the university of Leipzig. He then became CEO of the Jan and Täve Schur GmbH. In 2007, Schur confirmed in a newspaper interview his engagement as an “Informeller Mitarbeiter” (Informal Employee) with the Ministry of State Security.
