Swiss cyclist Roland Schär began his career with several wins at amateur races at home to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. In 1972 Schär was part of the Swiss quartet that placed eighth in the team time trial at the München Olympics. His biggest win came three years later when he became the national road race champion. In 1976 he turned professional, but only spent a few more years in the sport before retiring. His son Michael was also a cyclist who competed at the 2012 and 2020 Olympics.
