Wolfgang Steinmayr had a long career racing as an amateur in Austria. He won the Tour of Austria in 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976. He placed second at the Tour de l’Avenir in 1973 and 1974. He was a top climber, winning the climbing category at the Tour of Austria in 1973 and 1975 and at the Tour de l’Avenir in 1974.
