Biography

In 1992, track cyclist Stefan Steinweg was on the German pursuit team that won the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics. With the pursuit team he also won a gold medal at the 1991 World Championships. In 2000, he added another gold in the Madison event. Steinweg also won silver medals with the pursuit team in 1993, and in the individual pursuit in 2000. In 2001 and 2003, he won bronze in the individual pursuit and the scratch event. Later, he rode mainly six-day events.

In 1992, Steinweg was awarded the media prize _BAMBI with the pursuit team, and was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf in 1993, Germany’s highest sports award. He was initially banned for two years in 2003 because of the import of drugs to Australia, but this ban was later lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
