In the next two years, he won the International Ernst Sachs Tour. In both years he also won the national individual time trial title. Stumpf participated in both the Tour de Suisse and Friedensfahrt (Peace Race) in 1987, and won one stage on each tour. He also rode several minor tours.
At the 1988 Seoul Summer Games, Stumpf came sixth with the West German 100 km team time trial event, and 14th in the individual road race. In 1991 and 1992, he participated in the Tour de France, and also took part in several six-day races in Cologne. The following year, he retired and played American football, before taking over a pub in Schweinfurt. In May 2019 he had severe separation disputes with his wife Mirjam, killing her in his home, before starting a fire and then committing suicide.
