In 1950 Czechoslovak cyclist Stanislav Svoboda finished second behind the great Jan Veselý in the Praha–Karlovy Vary–Praha one-day race. One year later Svoboda finished 26th in the Peace Race, in addition to winning two stages of the Tour of East Germany. In 1952 he once again rode in the Peace Race where he won the second stage and finished 15th overall. These performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the Helsinki Games where he competed in the individual road race. The following year Svoboda rode in another edition of the Praha–Karlovy Vary–Praha, finishing fifth. He was only 36-years-old when he died in May 1967.
