German cyclist Heiko Szonn was on the pursuit team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics that disappointed by placing ninth. In the individual pursuit, he placed sixth. In 1995 and 1996 Szonn earned the German title in the team pursuit and in 1996 in the individual pursuit. In 1996, he also won his only international medal with a bronze in the team pursuit at the World Championships.
In 2002, Szonn tested positive for ephedrine during the Friedensfahrt (Peace Race) and was banned for one month. He later became a chief site manager in new power plant construction at an energy company in Brandenburg.
