Cyclist Noel Teggart had some good results during his career, including winning the Irish national road race title in both 1967 and 1972. Teggart also won the Tour of the North stage race in Northern Ireland in 1969 and 1973, along with a stage of the Tour of Ireland in 1971. In 1972 he was selected to represent Ireland in the road race and the team time trial at the München Olympics. The road race was marred by the presence of four cyclists from the Irish Republican Army, who jumped into the field to protest the Irish riders competing against cyclists from Northern Ireland (who competed for Great Britain). One of the cyclists grabbed the handlebars of Teggart’s bike, forcing him off the road and into a ditch. By the time he had recovered, the other competitors were long gone, with Teggart forced to retire from the race.
