In his youth and amateur career Spanish cyclist José Teña achieved more than 60 wins, including becoming the national junior champion in 1969. Two years later Teña won gold in the team time trial at the Mediterranean Games. His performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1972 München Games, where he placed 12th in the team time trial. Later that year Teña turned professional, signing with the Kas cycling team. His pro career was brief, however, as he suffered a serious knee injury during the 1973 edition of the Tour of Flanders, ultimately forcing him to retire one year later. Teña remained connected with the sport throughout his life, later serving as the President of the Molins de Rei Cycling Club.
