Vietnam sent a delegation of six athletes, all cyclists, to the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. Trần Gia Thu was one of the four riders selected to represent the nation in the road race. Unfortunately, none of the Vietnamese cyclists managed to finish the course and therefore did not place in the overall team rankings either. Ten years later Trần won bronze in the team road race at the Asian Games in Bangkok.
