Georg Totschnig was an Austrian cyclist participating at the 1992 Barcelona, 1996 Atlanta, and 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. He rode the road races on all occasions and placed 56th, 62nd and 21st respectively.
Totschnig turned professional in 1993 and won the Austria Tour in his first year with the Italian Team Polti. He then rode the Giro d’Italia in 1994 and 1995 with respective 13th and ninth places finishes overall. After three years with Polti, Totschnig joined the German Team Telecom (1997-2000) and rode three-times in the Tour de France before moving to another German Team, Gerolsteiner (2001-06) riding the Giro d’Italia twice and the Tour de France twice. After the 2006 season Totschnig retired.
In 2005, Totschnig was elected Austrian Sportsman of the Year. In 2009, rumours circulated that he might have used EPO-doping but it was never confirmed. Domestically, Totschnig won the national road race title in 1997 and the individual road time trial titles from 2001-04. Totschnig’s brother Harald was also an active cycling professional.
