At the age of 14 Trương Kim Hùng participated in his first cycling race, finishing third in a 27 km cross-country race around the province of Gia Định in South Vietnam. Trương competed at multiple student championship races before winning the opening stage of a four-day race when he was just 15-years-old. In 1966 he was selected to compete at the Asian Games in Bangkok, with him having consistent results back home over the next two years. Trương was only 17 when the Vietnam Cycling Federation selected him to represent the nation in the road race at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
A year after the Olympics Trương was initially selected to go to the Asian Championships in Korea but was forced to miss out due to military service. He enlisted into the Navy and was able to continue his passion and talent for cycling, winning both the Army Road Championship and Vietnam Cross Country Championship. He also was able to compete at the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in Burma in December 1969, winning five medals, including gold in the 200 km road race. In the early 1980s Trương moved to the United States where he remained for the rest of his life.
