In the mid-1950s cyclist Rafael Vaca won three editions of the Vuelta Mexico, including four individual stages of the 1956 race. One year earlier Vaca won bronze in the team road race at the Pan American Games. These performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1956 Melbourne Games, where he competed in the individual road race. In 1959 he won another bronze in the team road race, this time at the Central American and Caribbean Games.
