Staf Van Cauter

Staf Van Cauter began his cycling career with several wins in junior and amateur races in Belgium in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1971 Van Cauter, along with compatriots Gustaaf Hermans, Louis Verreydt, and Ludo Van Der Linden, won gold in the team time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Switzerland. One year later the quartet of Van Cauter, Hermans, Verreydt, and Ludo Delcroix finished fourth in the same event at the München Olympics. The Dutch team initially finished third, but were disqualified when Aad van den Hoek failed a doping test, but as the Belgian team had not been subjected to doping controls, no bronze medals were awarded.

In 1973 Van Cauter rode in the Tour de France but was forced to abandon the race on stage 13. One year later he rode in the one-day classic Liège–Bastogne–Liège, along with some smaller races in East Flanders, before retiring from the sport. Van Cauter later worked in the medical sector, becoming the President of a molecular imaging company.
