In the early 1950s Belgian cyclist Frans Van Den Bosch won a few amateur races in East Flanders, including a stage of the Tour of Belgium in 1956. These performances earned Van Den Bosch a place on the Olympic team for the Melbourne Games. In the individual road race at the Games he finished 42nd, almost 17 minutes behind the race winner, and seventh in the combined team event. After the Olympics he won two more stages at the Tour of Belgium in 1957, followed by several podiums at other amateur races in the country.
