Jørgen Gårskjær was an accomplished handball player in his youth and quickly moved into a role in coaching. From 1965 to 1968 Gårskjær co-coached the Danish women’s handball team before coaching the men’s team from 1972 to 1976. As the coach of the men’s team he led them at 1972 München Olympics and the 1976 Montréal Olympics, with a best finish of eighth place in Montréal. Overlapping with his time as an international coach Gårskjær also worked as the headmaster of the Aarhus Sports Academy in Denmark from 1974 to 1999.
