After a brief career playing handball Csaba Somhegy became a referee in the sport when he was just 18-years-old. In 1967 Somhegy he started to officiate in matches in the Hungarian National League, often pairing with compatriot Peter Szendrey. The pair’s talents were soon recognised, with both taking their international exams in 1974. During the 1980s they officiated at several high-profile international competitions, including the women and men’s IHF Cup finals in 1983 and 1984, respectively. In 1984 they both served as referees in the same four matches at the Los Angeles Olympics. Somhegy then gradually retried from the sport, designing mills as an engineer, before running his own company in the north-west village of Győrújbarát.
