For more than 30 years Štefan Jug worked as an international handball referee. In 1971 Jug became the youngest referee in the sport in Yugoslavia, consistently being the best in the country over the next decade. He officiated at multiple international tournaments, including 11 World Championships and the Olympics in 1988 and 1992. Jug also worked with several sporting bodies, including both the International and European Handball Federations. Outside of sport he played the violin for the Celje String Orchestra, later serving as their concertmaster and President.
