Biography

In 1935 Jean-François Van Der Motte won the Belgian amateur road race title before finishing third the following year. These results earned Van Der Motte a place on the Olympic team for the 1936 Games in Berlin. At the Games he was in the main peloton of more than 20 riders who tied for 16th place in the road race, just three seconds behind the winning time. The combined results of his compatriots in the event also earned him a bronze medal in the team race. Van Der Motte continued to compete as an amateur up to the start of the war, finishing third in the Belgian road race in 1938 and 1939. He was 93-years-old when he died in October 2007.
