Having finished third in the National Amateur Road Race Championship in 1951, Graham Vines won the race the following year and secured his place on the British road race team at the Helsinki Olympics. He finished 31st out of 111 starters in the individual race, and helped Great Britain to an 11th place finish in the team event.
