In 1952 Dutch cyclist Adrie Voorting won the Ronde van Midden-Nederland stage race to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. Voorting competed on both the road and track at the Helsinki Games, finishing 49th in the road race and fifth in the 4,000 metres team pursuit. He then turned professional, riding in the 1953 edition of the Tour de France, but being forced to abandon the race on stage 18. He had his best results one year later when he became a double national champion, winning the road race and the track pursuit titles at the Dutch championships. In 1955 Voorting rode in the Tour de France once more, but again was forced to abandon the race. Tragically he was only 30-years-old when he was killed due to injuries sustained in a car accident in August 1961. His older brother Gerrit was also a cyclist, and he won silver in the road race at the 1948 London Olympics.
