Born in 1897, James Walker represented South Africa at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics in both road and track cycling. Whilst he did not finish in the road race, Walker had better success on the track, winning two medals. With Bill Smith he won silver in the 2,000 metres tandem sprint, finishing just one length behind the British pair of Harry Ryan and Thomas Lance. In the 4,000 metres team pursuit he was part of the South African quartet that won bronze. Walker also rode in the 50 kilometres and sprint events, reaching the semi-finals in the latter. After the Olympics he dominated at the South African national track championships, winning 10 events over four years.
