After winning the 1967 Grafton to Inverell Classic cycling race, Donald Wilson was selected to represent Australia at the Mexico City Olympics. Grafton then competed in the road race and team time trial at the Games, finishing 14th in the latter with his compatriots. During the next decade he won multiple races in Australia, becoming the national road race champion in both 1975 and 1977. Towards the end of his career Watson was still producing consistent results, including finishing fifth overall at the Herald Sun Tour in both 1978 and 1979.
